Ranma 1/2 The Movie Big Trouble in Nekonron China

Ranma 1/2 The Movie Big Trouble in Nekonron, China takes the basic Ranma formula and turns it into a 75-minute movie. The movie starts with a fly by introduction of the main characters starting with Happosai the founding father of the Anything Goes Martial Arts. Happosai is doing business as usual as he enjoys stealing various female undergarments. On his outing he decides to steal a pair of Akane’s panties too. Ranma decided to intervene and put an end to his perverted ways once and for all. However, it backfires and now it looks like Ranma was trying to steal her panties. Outraged Akane tries to attack Ranma. This attack turns out into an all out parade of characters through out the series.

This chase turns even uglier when an evil looking cloud follows Ranma and the others back the Tendo house. The cloud is revealed to be an elephant. The owner of the elephant, Lychee a young Chinese girl, tells the story of a legendary scroll that Happosai tricked her great-grandmother into accepting in lieu of cash for a restaurant bill. Lychee is upset that he tricked her family and has traveled across Japan to seek revenge. Frustrated with him, she throws her half of the scroll at Happosai, where Akane picks it up. By chance Prince Kirin shows up and in the mix of things, kidnaps Akane, thinking she is the owner of the scroll. Kirin and the Seven Lucky Gods Martial Artists travel back to China in their airship.

The final battle with Kirin is decent, but not as memorable as some of the fight scenes in the TV series. After the battle is done, Ranma saves Akane, and Lychee saves the scroll. Kirin accepts his defeat and realizes that Lychee is the true owner of the scroll. As the movie is about to end, the other characters start asking what is so special about this scroll. I won’t ruin the ending, but it is quite funny. To me that is. It’s also worth sitting through the end credits as there is an epilogue at the end that ties everything up rather neatly.

Ranma ½ Movie Trailer.

Big Trouble in Nekonron, China is not for the first time viewers of Ranma. This movie does nothing to explain why characters transform into animals and other genders. I remember watching this movie for the first time after watching a few episodes here and there. Even with the little knowledge I had, I still enjoyed it, but it was hard to follow. Now that I have more seen most of the series, watching it again I see all the inside jokes that I missed the first time around. I would suggest watching at least up to season 2 before watching this movie. The animation of the movie is decent quality. It’s the same quality as the TV’s series. The voice actors returned for this movie adding to the charm of the series. Overall I really enjoyed and have great memories watching this with friends.

Ranma and company are just as enjoyable to watch in the movie as they are in the TV series. The new characters are fun to watch. Lychee can get a bit annoying, but she is just like Shampoo.

The animation in the movie, is decent quality. Just as good as the first few seasons of the TV series.

The story is really a damsel in distress. She gets kidnapped go save her kind of thing. It’s not that original, but what makes it work is the story of the characters. I really would suggest watching a few episodes, before diving into this movie.

It was great to see the original cast portray their characters.

It was awesome to see the characters act just like they do in the series.

Any fan of Ranma should get out there and buy this movie, you won’t be disappointed.
