A Slight Mishap

Thumbnail We are pleased to release our 1st "official" game. We say official because we have created Flash games in the past - they just were not for the general public. After months of saying we will finish this game - it has finally happened. You don't know how happy and excited we are. We hope you'll have as much (and more) fun playing it as we had making it.

We think it came out a fun little game - it may not be the most challenging game of all but we certainly had fun playing it and we think it has its moments. Since this is our first game available to a (hopefully) large audience, our goal was just to get something finished and playable - to gather feedback and to let people know that we're still around.

We considered several possible game ideas at first and eventually, we decided to create a very simple shooter. What could be more fun then just killing 1 1/2 minutes shooting stuff across the screen?

What started out as something that we could finish in a few weeks turned into a few months. We quickly began to realize that Flash was not going to handle all the graphics. We were having performance issues because of everything that was moving on screen - Flash movie clips simply can't handle the number of graphics we were using.

So the solution was to do custom rendering for our game and get rid of the Movie Clip concept altogether. This meant we could no longer use Movie Clips to do animations. It also meant that we had to rethink how to animate all the characters in our game. We could still use Movie Clips to get the animations finished, but we would then need to output the final animation into a set of gridded png-s.

From there we would tell Flash the details of these png-s, such as width, height and so on. So really, we were creating sprites that had the entire animation of a character for Flash on a single png to use instead of a movie clip. All this information is then given to our custom renderer that performs all the drawing in the game - quite a bit faster than the Flash Player would had we used movie clips.

Well, long story short, we had a few more speed bumps along the way but the game is finally here for you to play and love or hate.

Enjoy using this site, and tell us what you think of it, be it good or bad, through our Contact Us page or visiting us on the forums.
